Neiley began her painting career in watercolor. In 2001, she took on a gallery space in Hallowell, Maine that had two large window displays. Watercolor paintings cannot tolerate direct sun, so she began painting acrylics on canvas for the windows. The response was wonderful. Painting in acrylic evolved into painting in oil, which has been her primary medium for over 25 years now. The most common subjects she paints are trees, flowers and animals, though she will paint anything that captures her attention. Usually, it is more about color than subject. Many of her paintings are color "themed". For example, they may be referred to by their dominant color, such as a "yellow" painting, or a "green" painting, etc.. Custom paintings or "commissioned artworks" are also a major part of Neiley's career. Whether it is a pet portrait, or any other subject, she is honored each and every time she is given the opportunity to paint something special. Currently, Neiley paints some of the time in her home studio, but most often you can stop in and watch her paint at Neiley Gallery & Studio in Freeport, Maine. It is a treat for her to share her art in the midst of the process with her visitors. She welcomes you to come in, see what she is working on, ask questions and "talk art" with her anytime she is there. The rest of her body of work (the larger portion of it, actually) is on display in Bar Harbor:
"Café This Way" showcases Neiley's work exclusively. It is a rotating show of about 30 paintings. This gallery space has proven to be the perfect venue. The solo show is installed in May and remains until mid October. "This show has been the foundation of my career. The exposure and support I have received from this special place cannot be measured. They truly have provided me the way to make art for a living. Thank you Susanne for this opportunity and for supporting my art for so many years." - Neiley
"I am a mother, animal lover, and admirer of nature. As an artist, I strive to convey my passions and personality throughout my work. I love to explore Maine to find inspiration. For these shows, my focus has been to create art that showcases the beauty that I find around me, as well as the unique things that fascinate me. Though I am quite serious about my art, I am just as aware of the need for humor in it all. Whether through color, subject or title, I'd like to touch the kid in us all and every time I stand at the easel
I always paint in hopes to make people smile." -Neiley
